HUANG YI & KUKA at 3LD Art & Technology Center

3 by Summer Yen

Choreographer, dancer, inventor, and videographer Huang Yi (黃翊 / 黄翊) reinforces Taiwan’s reputation as a dynamic place for contemporary dance and technology in an upcoming production at 3LD Art & Technology Center that will run from February 11 – 17, 2015.  In Huang Yi & KUKA (黄翊与库卡 / 黃翊與庫卡), a robot by KUKA Robotics joins human dancers on stage to explore the possibilities of the interactions between man and machine.

The work fulfills Huang’s childhood dream of having a robot dance partner and required development from scratch.  After learning the mechanics of the industrial KUKA robot, he conceptualized the movements and programmed the machine to create the partner he wanted.   He says of the experience, “Dancing face to face with a robot is like looking at my own face in a mirror… I think I have found the key to spin human emotions into robots.”  The work was first presented as a 20-minute duet between Huang and KUKA at the 2013 Ars Electronica in Austria and won the Taipei Digital Arts Performance Award at Digital Arts Center Taipei.  It was developed into a full-length piece with two additional dancers as part of 3-Legged Dog Art & Technology Center‘s Artist Residency program and their 3LD/3D+ program.

With its originality and mechanically precise movements, this “deeply poetic work flawlessly intertwines modern dance and visual arts with the realm of robotics” and should intrigue both the arts-minded and the engineering-minded.

About Huang:

Huang’s pioneering work is steeped in his fascination with the partnership between humans and robots. He interweaves continuous movement with mechanical and multimedia elements to create a form of dance which corresponds with the flow of data, effectively make the performer a dancing instrument. Named by Dance Magazine as one of the “25 to Watch,” Huang was immersed in the arts at a young age, spending much of his childhood in his parents’ studio watching them teach tango and learning to paint alongside his father. He is widely considered one of Asia’s most prolific choreographers.

Huang’s works have received high praise at venues internationally, including the Ars Electronica Festival (Austria), Joyce Theater, Engien-Les-Bain Centre des Arts (France), Nimbus Dance Works (Jersey City), Cloud Gate 2 (Taipei), the Indonesian Dance Festival (Jakarta), New York Live Arts, and the American Dance Festival (North Carolina). Huang’s collaboration with Cloud Gate 2 toured internationally in 2012, to much acclaim. He has received awards for his work at Digital Arts Center Taipei and the 3rd Cross Connection Ballet International Choreography Competition in Copenhagen, among many others across Europe and Asia.

Huang Yi & KUKA was developed as part of 3-Legged Dog Art & Technology Center‘s Artist Residency program and their 3LD/3D+ program and is presented by Huang Yi Studio+ and 3-Legged Dog in association with Sozo Artists, commissioned by Quanta Arts Foundation.
